Clarification and Solid–Liquid Separation

Huading delivers advanced centrifuge technology for sea buckthorn beverage processing. Our integrated solid–liquid and oil separation solutions help producers achieve clear, nutrient-rich juice and maximize yield. They also preserve the fruit’s natural antioxidants.

The Botanical Origin and Health Benefits of Sea Buckthorn

Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is a thorny shrub native to northern and central Europe, the Caucasus and western Asia. Its small orange-yellow berries are packed with nutrients. Sea buckthorn berries are rich in vitamins, carotenoids and fatty acids. The seeds yield an oil high in fatty acids.

These nutrients make sea buckthorn juice attractive to health-conscious consumers. Palmitoleic acid is an omega-7 fatty acid that is rare in plant foods but abundant in sea buckthorn. It has been linked to cholesterol reduction and cardiovascular benefits.

Because the plant thrives in arid and saline areas, large plantations have been established across China, Mongolia, and Central Asia. This widespread cultivation ensures a steady supply of berries for juice processing.

Sea Buckthorn Processing

Sea buckthorn berries must go through multiple steps before turning into a stable, clear beverage. The process begins with destemming, washing, crushing, and pulping to remove seeds and peels. The pulp then undergoes enzymatic hydrolysis to break down pectin and improve juice yield. After this, large fibers and solids are removed in preparation for centrifugation.

Sea Buckthorn Processing

Step 1 – Decanter centrifuge:
The first centrifugation step uses a two-phase decanter centrifuge to separate and remove solids. After this step the remaining solid particles are only 10–50 µm.

Step 2 – Disc-stack centrifuge (three-phase separator):
A second step uses a disc-stack centrifuge to remove the oil naturally present in sea buckthorn juice, yielding a clear beverage.

By integrating decanter and disc separators, the line produces high-clarity juice while recovering valuable by-product oil.

The Role of Decanter Centrifuges

Huading’s decanter centrifuge is the workhorse for the first separation step. A decanter centrifuge is a rotating solid-bowl device that accelerates mixtures to high g-forces, causing denser solids to move outward while lighter liquid flows inward. The feed enters a horizontal cylindrical–conical bowl. Under high g-forces solid particles collect on the wall and are transported by a screw conveyor to the discharge ports.

Key advantages of decanter centrifuges include:

  • Clean appearance and compact footprint
  • Fast start-up and shut-down
  • High throughput and continuous operation
  • Ability to apply thousands of g’s, reducing settling time from hours to seconds
  • Versatility in bowl length and cone angle for different applications
  • Lower labour and maintenance costs compared with filter presses

Decanter Applications in Sea Buckthorn Juice

  • For sea buckthorn beverages, Huading’s decanter centrifuge continuously separates pulp and fibre from the juice.
  • Adjustable differential speed controls the cake moisture, ensuring solids discharge in a semi-dry form.
  • Clarified juice exits via centripetal pumps.
  • High g-force and a long bowl produce a thin liquid layer that improves separation efficiency and prevents pectin clogging downstream equipment.
  • All wetted parts are stainless steel, with a cleaning-in-place (CIP) system to maintain hygiene.
  • Wear-resistant materials and high-solids capacity reduce equipment requirements and fit smoothly into existing processing lines.

Disc-Stack Centrifuges for Final Clarification

After the decanter centrifuge, the partially clarified juice still contains micro-particles and droplets of sea buckthorn oil. Huading’s high-speed disc-stack centrifuge polishes the juice by removing these residuals.

Disc-stack centrifuges work by:

  • Using a stack of conical plates to increase the settling area
  • Applying high g-forces to separate fine particles down to 0.5 µm and immiscible liquids
  • Sedimenting particles on disc surfaces where they flocculate and move outward
  • Intermittent discharge of accumulated solids

This process produces sparkling clear juice and separates oil as a valuable by-product. Because of its vertical orientation, the disc separator has a smaller footprint than a decanter and suits space-constrained beverage plants. Combined with evaporation, pasteurisation, and aseptic filling, this two-centrifuge system yields ready-to-drink beverages, concentrated juice, or spray-dried powder.

Your Partner for High-Performance Juice Lines

Huading’s beverage processing solutions draw on decades of research and manufacturing expertise. The equipment is designed for easy operation and integration with washing, pulping, enzymatic hydrolysis, evaporation and packaging systems.

Engineers tailor each line to the customer’s capacity (20–1,500 t/d) and packaging format. From small-scale specialty drinks to large industrial production, Huading provides flexible centrifuge solutions that help customers increase profitability while safeguarding product quality.

By removing solids and oil without excessive heat or chemicals, our separation technology protects the natural nutrients in the juice.
